What is the design challenge?

"Since its founding, Rip Curl has actively supported groups and issues relevant to its local communities, particularly the maintenance of coastal environments. How can you encourage the larger public to be aware of, contribute to, or actively support the maintenance of coastal environments?

Develop a third-party mobile app that encourages local coastal communities to take action and help preserve their coastal environments"

What is it?

SaveAge is an app that encourages users to decline the amount of waste at coastal environments. By downloading 'SaveAge', it solves the problem in an innovative and creative outlet as it encourages the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle in a fun, rewarding outlet through extrinsic motivations of being able to collect points to redeem as products.

Introducing Saveage...

A mobile application designed to inspire individuals to reduce waste in coastal areas. Users are encouraged to embrace the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle in an enjoyable and rewarding manner by earning points that can be redeemed for products. SaveAge provides motivation for users to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts.

Does the solution address a target audience and their needs?

Our app, 'SaveAge,' targets adolescents to adults who frequent coastal views or beaches and often encounter litter. To address this issue, we've introduced 'EcoSaver' bins strategically placed around beaches, categorised for plastics, metals, and papers, embodying a form of digital environmental consciousness.

SaveAge features a user-friendly interface with an intuitive flow, incorporating universally recognised icons for tasks and a visually appealing colour scheme inspired by oceanic elements. Consistent typography and graphics presented in a playful, lighthearted manner enhance the overall user experience.

Addressing the needs of our audience, we've incorporated social features such as connections and a marketplace/shop for recycled products. This approach resonates with our target demographic, tapping into their common interests in shopping and socialising, making SaveAge a fitting and engaging platform for adolescents and adults alike.

What I’ve learnt from this project

• Working under pressure within a tight time frame - resulting in time management skills and allowing me to work and produce a fun innovative design concept with time constraints

• Solving complex problems throughout co-creation, rapid prototyping, and qualitative testing with targeted users

• Cooperating and forming solutions with other another designer based off decision making skills and team communicative skills

• Creating and designing a product based off a given brief and ensuring it is functional and practical to society
